iPhone 5 pre-orders push 2 million in first day

iPhone 5 topped two million in just 24 hours, more than double the previous record of one million held by iPhone 4S. Demand for iPhone 5 exceeds the initial supply and while the majority of pre-orders will be delivered to customers on September 21, many are scheduled to be delivered in October.
Pre-sales at Apple.com lasted about an hour before shipping dates slipped. Shipping times slipped on all models for all carriers at once. Previously specific models dropped off one at a time. Also, pre-orders directly through the major carriers started to see shipping times slip later that morning. As Apple indicated those who missed the initial launch-day allotments will get their pre-orders in early October. Prospective iPhone 5 owners can still get a phone on launch day, but it will be at in-store retail locations on Friday.
